I have since re-installed Windows 8 but I’m too afraid to try connecting these again. For some reason my built-in trackpad no longer worked when I booted into Windows so I had to use either my Magic Mouse of Magic Trackpad. I do have to warn you that when I connected my Boot Camp partition of Windows 8 to a VM using VMware, it messed up a few drivers. Connecting it to your Boot Camp partition allows you to either boot into Windows or run it in a VM. You can either have a pure VM where the storage self-adjusts as you go, or you can connect it to your Boot Camp partition where memory is fixed. Even though I love my Mac, there are still times I need to run Windows. For those of you who don’t know what a VM is, it is essentially a mock environment that allows you to run another operating system in a window as if it’s just another application. They allow you to set up virtual machines of just about any operating system you can imagine.

I have only used VMware Fusion since we get it for free as CSE students, but I’m grouping them together because I hear both are great. These are two separate products that pretty much do the same thing. There are both free and paid versions of the app, but the free version does everything I need it to.ĥ. It syncs all your notes via the cloud so you’re never without the information you need (unless, of course, you don’t have an internet connection).

Evernote is a multiplatform note-taking application. Ever wanted to take notes and have them anywhere you go? Now you can. This program is $10, but again, it’s well worth it.Ĥ.
I believe you can also set up keyboard shortcuts in this app, however I don’t use that feature (I had Quicksilver first so I never bothered to set it up). This feature is even greater since OS X doesn’t have a true maximize window feature. Now I just hit Ctrl+option+*direction* and the window instantly resizes and moves itself. This app was made to mimic that very feature in OS X. HyperDock. Are you sick of manually having to resize your windows on your Mac? Jealous of Windows’ snap feature? Now you can have it. There is also a search function built into it, but I don’t ever use it so I can’t speak to it. Yes, you can do something similar with the default keyboard preferences, but I much prefer Quicksilver. In fact, I find myself hardly using my dock at all anymore. You no longer have to go to Mission Control or your dock to find the app you want. You’re in Safari and want to jump to Word? You’re there as soon as you hit those couple keys. You can set up a keyboard trigger to launch or jump to any app or setting on your machine. Unlike Jitouch, however, these are all keyboard shortcuts. Quicksilver. This is another one of my favorite apps because of all the shortcuts it gives you. I guarantee this program pays for itself the first month you use it.Ģ. You don’t want to pay $7 you say? Seriously consider all the time you spend on your computer every day and how many times you have to clumsily drag your mouse across the screen to click on another tab. I can move and resize my window with another tap. I can move left and right between my open tabs with the tap of a finger. With Jitouch I can refresh, close, and re-open tabs with the swipe of a couple fingers. Browsing the web without this is almost torture to me.
It’s a program for your Mac that adds in all sorts of touch and swipe shortcuts to your trackpad or magic mouse.

Jitouch. This is definitely my favorite piece of software on my computer. Here are some of my favorites for my Mac that I couldn’t go without:ġ. I also starred all the programs that are available on Windows as well. This is by no means a full, comprehensive review, but it should provide some good insight into each. I thought it would be a good idea to give an overview of some of my favorite tools I use almost everyday. There are so many different productivity tools out there ready to be installed on your machine. One thing that has really become a pet peeve of mine is people not taking advantage of the amazing pieces of software out there.
